Got a special service or demographic you want to target on your website? This happens frequently in business – a change in direction, a new partnership, even a special event you want your online visitors to focus on. Usually it’s something big enough to need more functionality than just a new page or posting, but not big enough to wipe out all of the SEO, design, content and other work you’ve done on your site by starting from scratch.

The answer to your quandary might be to build yourself a Microsite. A Microsite is a smaller, more simple website – a subset of your main website – that’s extremely focused for a specific reason. Usually Microsites are heavily optimized for a small set of specific keywords and phrases, are geo-targeted and meant for a particular demographic or to achieve a particular goal.

Think of Microsites as another channel in your digital marketing toolbox, somewhere between email marketing and SEO of your main site. Like email, a Microsite is targeted for a certain subset of your audience, complete with targeting and specific calls-to-action. And, like your main site, it’s a live website with a full complement of keywords and SEO, designed to attract a certain segment of online search for a specific purpose.

When you’re considering a Microsite to handle a subset of your online business, keep in mind these 8 advantages they offer marketers:

A Microsite can be developed with highly specific optimization, which will drive Search Engine traffic more quickly than a traditionally optimized site.

Since your Microsite will feature content more focused on a particular functionality or subject than your more broadly focused main site, Search Engines will find it much more attractive, and easier to index. Search spiders and bots thrive on focused, targeted content that shows common relevance – the kind that makes delivery of relevant results to searchers that much easier. Target your Microsite, and your results should skyrocket relatively quickly.

Microsites keep your visitors focused on the item or service at hand

Positioning content to attract and service a specific marketing segment gives Microsites the power to focus on a single core concept, product category or service. Since the Microsite is so focused, there’s usually no navigation or information that’s not directly relevant to its purpose that would serve to distract visitors from converting.

Your Microsite is the perfect way to appeal to a new and different audience

If you’re widening your prospects by introducing a new or different product category or service than the one on which your main site is focused, you can use a Microsite to target and attract the right demographic segment very effectively – one that may not even visit your main site now.

Microsites are supercharged lead generators

With highly targeted, clean SEO and focused content, visitors that are likely to find your Microsite are genuinely interested in exactly what it has to offer. Since they’re already searching for it, your Microsite is much more likely to encourage them to convert to a strong lead – or even a paying customer. These kinds of vetted leads usually don’t come cheap any other way – but offer more than most!

Microsite domain names can be keyword rich

Since your Microsite is so focused, you can easily assign it with keyword rich domain names that directly relate to positioning (such as eCommerce, Fulfillment, Warehousing Solutions or Logistics). Search engines heavily favor URL keywords in results for specific queries, which will push your Microsite to the top of SERPs.

Microsites give an aspect of your business some website real estate it deserves

Building a Microsite for a particular aspect of your business such as a new service offering or new targeted demographic shows that you’re serious about devoting resources to that particular facet. Showing this level of commitment improves conversions and builds customer confidence in a big way.

Microsites present exceptional design opportunities

Microsite designs can be completely customized to appeal directly to its target audience. By contrast, most websites are designed to appeal to many possible visitors, with much more general interests. This focus gives your design team an opportunity to impress a specific audience segment, or show off a new association or product offering. In this way, Micorsites are perfect for preserving another partner’s branding within yours if your efforts are being combined for a single purpose.

Microsites help your business promote global vs local

Microsites lend themselves to be used for particular geographic audiences, which makes extremely local targeting possible. Content can easily be hyper-localized to allow for cultural differences like colors and imagery, colloquial language, currency, specific spelling and alternate pricing.

Microsites are a perfect way to add more tightly focused targeting to your overall digital strategy. And, considering the benefits that rigid, focused targeting can offer, Microsites are among the stronger tools you can work with to get significant results quickly.

Apple has been accused of 'ignoring the human cost' of its product manufacturing chain in a new report published this week.

A New York Times article, following up on the article published last weekend that explained why Apple chooses to manufacture its products outside the U.S., quotes former Apple staff and contractors who accuse the company of being complicit to worker abuse.

"Employees work excessive overtime, in some cases seven days a week, and live in crowded dorms. Some say they stand so long that their legs swell until they can hardly walk. Underage workers have helped build Apple's products, and the company's suppliers have improperly disposed of hazardous waste and falsified records, according to company reports and advocacy groups that, within China, are often considered reliable, independent monitors," the article asserts.

However, another Apple executive who was quoted anonymously said: "You can either manufacture in comfortable, worker-friendly factories, or you can reinvent the product every year, and make it better and faster and cheaper, which requires factories that seem harsh by American standards. Right now, customers care more about a new iPhone than working conditions in China."

The New York Times report points to the fact that this issue has caused an "unresolved tension" in the company, with other executives uneasy about the working conditions, but unwilling to put relationships with suppliers such as Foxconn – which manufactures 40 percent of the world's electronic devices, it is reckoned – in jeopardy by making such demands.

Although the basic principles of writing good copy for your web site don’t change in the online realm, there are certain differences that writers should be aware of. One of the most important aspects of online content is that it should be easily searchable by search engines, especially Google. This is what ultimately gives power to online content, because people are able to search and get to the content they are looking for.

Irrespective of what kind of online content you write, it always helps to know about search engine optimisation, or SEO. It helps to know that SEO is not about keyword spamming or including some peculiar grammatically incorrect keyword into your writing as many times as possible. This is, in fact, the worst thing you can do from an SEO point of view.

SEO trends change all the time as search engines evolve. It should be noted that the ultimate goal of search engines is to deliver the best quality information on top. The means to this end differ all the time and thus the changing SEO trends. Here are some of the things you need to be aware of in 2012 with respect to what is good SEO and what is not.

Title Tag and Headings

Title tags are still very important. This means you should be able to define a topic in a crisp manner, which also excites and induces the reader to read (click) the article that you have written. As for the heading tags, search engines still give a good deal of importance to these.

This is similar to coming up with catchy headings for essays or stories in magazines. As an online writer, however, you want to strike a balance between what seems like a great heading for readers to see and what search engines look for. Search engines, for example, would still like the main keyword that you are targeting in the keyword.

As for the heading tags, search engines still give a good deal of importance to these. It also makes logical sense for an article to be split up into different parts. However, do be aware that a lot of dishonest webmasters have been abusing the heading tags, spamming their keywords into these. You will be severely penalized with poor rankings or worse if you attempt to do this. Headings should never be overdone. Use them when they make sense.

Article Marketing

A lot of webmasters still employ article marketing to promote their websites online. However, after the (in)famous Panda Update by Google, article marketing has lost its value a great deal and doesn’t retain the power that it used to.

In 2012, you can only expect this to get worse. Even highly trusted article marketing sites like Ezinearticles, Squidoo, Hubpages, etc. have been severely impacted by the Panda update.

You might still want to use article marketing, especially for new sites to be indexed quicker by Google and to build some backlinks, but do be aware that they are not going to do the magic for your rankings that they were capable of a year ago.

Leveraging Social Media

Google announced that it is going to include links from social media into its rankings with its announcement on social search. This is a big change for traditional SEO that seldom cared for social media. Now, writers need to be aware of this angle. Social media marketing is only going to trend up in the coming months and years, so every writer should be aware of its importance in SEO and rankings.

The way you can leverage social media is by creating viral content that naturally gets shared across social media. This could include lists, guides, how-to’s, personal experiences, etc. Before you write an article, think about this – if you accidentally came across this article online, would you share it on your Facebook or Twitter?

Social media is only going to trend up in the coming months and years, so every writer should be aware of its importance in SEO and rankings. You should also be aware of the different strategies used to share and promote content utilizing social media.

Fresh Content When Applicable

That’s right, Google is now also looking at fresh results whenever applicable, as rolled out in Google’s Freshness Algorithm. This change reflects the way searchers use Google. As explained in the official Google blog post, if say you are searching for the latest score of the Mets game, chances are you are not interested in the historical scores of the team. Fresher content is thus welcome.

Think of Wikipedia. If something changes in the world, it is immediately reflected in Wikipedia. Are you surprised that Wikipedia ranks so high in Google for most relevant keywords?

If you have content that needs to be updated with fresh information, by all means do so with the help of an update or edit. This will only make your content look newer and potentially more relevant to Google.

This is probably not the first thing that writers think of when they want to write an article. Now, you might need to revisit your work and make it more relevant, reflective of the changing times. This can be a significant deviation from what freelance writers are used to – write and forget.

Long Detailed Posts Win

Google has always appreciated longer, more detailed posts whenever it makes sense. For example, if you are writing a guide, chances are, you have a lot of information to share. Making the guide more comprehensive would be good for you, instead of breaking it up into many smaller chunks.

Long posts have an added advantage of lateral search indexing which helps Google classify the content more accurately. It also usually provides a higher level of authority. They get linked to more often as well, all of which are good for SEO. So whenever possible, even in the world of 140 characters and status updates, longer and comprehensive content win in the end.

Whether you are setting Facebook up for yourself or if you are going to be asking Sea Dragon Design to help you build your business facebook page or facebook application. According to Google, they aren’t actually looking at Facebook “likes” or “shares” as a separate part of their ranking algorithm but visitors to your web site or brand web page are all good.

The number one thing to remember with Facebook shares: Their marketing value resides in the fact that they are coming from a reputable source; from someone known to, and respected by, the person on the other end. Make no mistake, Facebook is a great marketing tool allowing you to get those personal referrals and recomendations from your existing customers.

Choose a Great Facebook Page Name

Choose a great business name. Not too spammy, not too generic. Something descriptive and easy to remember. If it’s too generic Facebook might blacklist the name. Once you have a name, don’t change your page name. Once established, keep it and brand it. Renaming isn’t ever a good idea from an SEO perspective.

The name you choose should be linked to your business, brand name or area of expertese for example Kent Bathroom Supplies Ltd could be “Best Bathroom Bargains” or “Bathroom Supplies Kent”

Facebook URL Names Are Also Important

Facebook now allows vanity names so make sure to add one if you can. The URL won’t exactly be yours but www.facebook.com/seadragondesign is a lot better than www.facebook.com/564322. The chosen user name should incorporate one of the terms related to your business and also be memorable. you now have a URL that is searchable. It’s important to know that Facebook requires 100 fans before you can pick a username, of which you can then do by going to http://facebook.com/username

Use Keyword Rich Text to fill out the “About” and “Info” Sections of Your Facebook Page

This will place searchable terms near the top of the Facebook page in the CSS. These are small areas so refine your text! In addition, make sure to include your address information so that the page will pop up on local searches- a favorite of Google’s. In the info section also add links to your website.

Use Keywords in Your Facebook Status Updates

Updates provide a great place to include your keywords and increase visibility. This is also the place to drive traffic to your own website. Never forget that one of your primary objectives for having a brilliantly designed Facebook page or facebook application is to drive traffic back to your website where you and not Facebook can take advantage of the traffic.

When you “attach link” FB gives you the opportunity to edit the text by clicking on the box. Include keyword-enriched text as early as possible. (Be aware that FB will channel this link through their own menu bar so this isn’t going to get you a direct link.) Next, include the URL of your website. Third, don’t put everything on Facebook. Instead provide an interesting enticing bit that will make people want to read more and make it clear that they can do this on your website.

Make Facebook Picture Descriptions Count

Facebook is a visual medium. Facebook will change titles on photos but descriptions live on. Use your SEO keywords as often as possible. Read each description from two angles- once for your customers and once from a computer’s angle. “John and Paul At Work” could as easily be: “Jack And John our IT Specialists at Shepway Computer Services see more at http://www.shepwaycomputerservices.co.uk ”.

Use Notes and Discussion Boards On Facebook

The content on both of these is indexable. Notes and the Discussion Boards are indexable and therefore they can make for great SEO. In addition, some people just use Facebook and do almost nothing else online. Using a discussion board gives you a way to reach this group of people. It’s important to note that automatic pull in of blog posts are now being phased out of Facebook.

Include Shares & Likes on your websites

Although not directly SEO, you should include Facepage shares and likes into all of your websites. Also, take some time to stay on top of the Facebook Developers news. The developers page is also a great place to come up with new ideas about how to monetize the platform and get the most out of Facebook.

In summary, use Facebook as effectively as you can by paying attention to SEO. Take the time to use the above suggestions and then compare and track the changes in your FB code (Available to anyone for any page by viewing “source code” in your browser). Over time, graph long term changes in your traffic to see if the extra time and energy is really paying off.

Web design is such a broad field that mistakes can be spotted all over the place – it is almost impossible to create the perfect without a mistake until you undergoing prolonged and extensive testing, which not everybody has the financial power or time to do. There is also the possibility that something that was considered normal a few years ago has most likely been superseeded by a newer and better method. These mistakes can range from a few pixels of padding missing to using a wrong number of fonts. This way your web site will be better overall and your customers will appreciate the attention to detail.

Let’s begin with the typography. With website content being arguably the most important part of your web site, your designer must have knowledge of how to make it work. Reading some typography books or tutorials is recommended, because it will improve your use of fonts and typefaces and will allow you to play with them for better results. With the right font every piece of text can be made interesting and attractive in web design. Modern designers already know the importance of typography and spend lots of hours testing new typefaces and improving their designs before delivery.

Serif – Sans-serif relation

Mixing differnet types of typefaces is popular nowadays and works wonders if you know how to make it work. Mixing two different styles can create results that look very good, but pay attention to mixing serif with sans-serif fonts. While you can try your skills doing it, there is a good idea to ask for a second opinion before you decide to go ahead with mixed fonts.

Number of fonts

There is not much to say here, but the bottom line is don’t mix too many fonts in the same design. Having a couple of fonts to play with is much better than playing with the whole Google Web Fonts suite, because this can, and will, disrupt the readability of your text. As a rule of thumb it is good to use the same font for content all over the webpage, and only use another one for headings, big titles and other elements. Two fonts should be enough for every matter, and keep in mind: never use more than three at a time.
